Biography of

Professor Syed V. Ahamed

  Syed V. Ahamed received his Ph.D. and D.Sc. (E.E.) degrees from the University of Manchester and his MBA (Economics) from the New York University. He taught at the University of Colorado for 2 years before joining AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1966.  In 1981 he taught Electrical Engineering at the University of Hawaii at Monoa and in 1982 he became a Professor of Computer Science at the City University of New York and a member of the Doctoral Faculty in 1985.  Concurrently he has taught at New York Polytechnic at Brooklyn as a visiting Professor of Computer Science from 1982 to 1986.

Professor Ahamed has been a Telecommunications consultant to Bell Communications Research, AT&T Bell Laboratories, Bell Labs Innovations, Lucent Technologies, Celcom, Malaysia, Telecom Malaysia, Timplex Corporation, Telecom Australia, ETH Zurich, Schweizerischer Nationalfonds zur Forderung, (Swiss NSF), Berne, and Schmid Switzerland.

He is the co-recipient of the 1981 IEEE Communications Society, Leonard C. Abraham Prize Paper Award and the co-recipient of the 1964 Honorable Citation for the IEEE Aerospace Society paper. With Professor Michael J. Miller he has written two other books 'Digital Transmission Systems and Networks," - Volumes I & II in 1987 and 1988 published by Computer Science Press. 

In 1997 and 1998, Professor Ahamed and Dr. Victor B. Lawrence (Vice President of Advanced Technology, Bell-labs Innovations, Lucent Technologies) have authored a two Volume Collection “Intelligent Broadband Multimedia Networks,” (20 Chapters, 561 pages) and “Design and Engineering of Intelligent Communication Systems,” (18 Chapters, 675 pages), published by Kluwer Academic Publishers.   

In 1991 he became a Fellow of the IEEE and listed in Marquis 1995, Who's who in the World. He holds over 17 American and European patents (3 pending) and has published over 150 papers, numerous chapters in books and works with an excellent team of Ph.D. students at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  Currently, he is a Networks and Management consultant throughout the world.
